United Way Legacy Celebration on April 25th
It started out in1928 as the Community Chest under the leadership of the local Chamber of Commerce. As reported by the local newspaper, in 1930, the eleven social welfare agencies in the Community Chest Agencies did “123,399 acts of Human Kindness” which included things such as reuniting families, giving free legal aid, furnishing pairs of glasses, caring for orphans, furnishing pints of milk for under-nourished children, providing free meals and groceries for needy families,
Over the years, the “acts of Kindness” have changed according to the needs and funds available, but continue to be the main focus of the United Way as it continually searches for current needs and the funds available to cover those needs.
The Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Hazleton, Inc. invite you to join us on Thursday, April 25, 5 p.m., at Capriotti’s, 1 Banks Avenue, McAdoo for the 95th Anniversary Legacy Gala & 56th Annual Meeting to celebrate the legacy of “the acts of kindness” and the people responsible for all the hard work and dedication that have made those “acts of kindness” possible.
In order to celebrate the Legacy of the United Way of Greater Hazleton which was built on the shoulders of the strong leadership and dedication of volunteers and community donors there will be pictures, videos, collages, a program book and the opportunity to renew old United Way memories and friendships. And, of course, some fantastic food.
“When, we at United Way, looked back at 95 years, almost 10 decades of rich history, we realized it really was time to honor that history” said Gary Perna. President/C.E.O. “It has, indeed, been 95 years of human kindness by many, many generous Hazletonians and businesses. It has not always been an easy 95 years, nor will it be an easy future, but there is a great deal to honor and celebrate. We hope you will attend and join us in the joy of remembering.”
The cost of the 95th Anniversary Legacy Gala is $50 per person.
Please make your reservation by using Pay Pal, Stripe, Venmo or by sending a check to the United Way of Greater Hazleton, 200 West Chapel Street, Second Floor, Hazleton, PA 18201.
Event sponsorships are still available by contacting United Way President and CEO Gary Perna at gary.perna@local.unitedway.org or calling 570-455-9515.
